DRESS REHEARSAL PROCEDURES
--Be advised although we make every effort to avoid this, it is common for dress rehearsal to run late. It is also common for the dress rehearsal to be chaotic as parents and dancers are in and out of the dressing rooms and the theater. At the show everything is much more calm and controlled.
--Dancer Check In: Upon arrival at Curtis High School, please sign your dancer in at your dancer’s assigned room. The list of room assignments will be e-mailed shortly and will also be posted on the bulletin board. We will have escorts to direct you to your dancer’s assigned room. Hair should be performance ready upon arrival. There will be help available for those who need it. For the Creative Movement and Pre-Ballet classes, make up is not required at dress rehearsal. For all other performers, make up is required at dress rehearsal. After you assist in costuming your child, you may then go quietly into the theater and observe the rehearsal. It is very important that you are prompt as we will rehearse the finale bow first, so the dancers can be released as soon as they are done practicing their piece on stage. Please be sure to sign your dancer out prior to leaving. Parents and guardians only are allowed at the dress rehearsal and please if possible, no siblings. The theater needs to be quiet as we run through the show. We allow only pre-designated volunteer parents (no siblings) backstage to allow enough room for performers to focus on their work and use backstage time for preparation.
All dancers should be fed, hydrated, and well-rested before arriving at the theater. Once they enter the dressing area they will need to stay with their class and assigned parent(s). Please only allow your dancer to bring water and snacks/food that are CLEAN (i.e. crackers, pretzels, etc).
Students will be able to observe dress rehearsal AFTER they have been on stage. They will not, however, be able to watch the recital performance, as they will need to remain in costume for the curtain call. Supervision and activities will be provided for all the young dancers backstage at all times.
All performers: You must be neat, orderly, and extremely quiet backstage as well as in your assigned room. The volunteers and staff that are in the room are to be treated with respect and their instructions must be adhered to at all times. After dress rehearsal and the performance you must pick up after yourselves. This is mandatory. Do NOT touch any of the Curtis High School’s belongings.
Videography and photography are allowed during dress rehearsal ONLY. Absolutely NO flash photography allowed for the safety of the dancers as it can cause a temporary blindness effect to the dancers on stage.
If your dancer has a quick change, she is expected to change on the side of the stage in a designated quick change area. We will have a person assigned to help them. Please bring your dancer's needs to our attention at dress rehearsal, before it begins.
DIRECTIONS TO CURTIS HIGH SCHOOL FROM FREEDOM DANCE CENTER:
Curtis High School

University Place, WA 98466
Costumes/Headpieces and Shoes
You are responsible for your own tights, shoes, hair & makeup. Do not forget your shoes! The shoes should be clean leather or canvas and must fit properly. No “slipper-style” shoes if in a ballet piece. Also, all of the dancers’ belongings should be labeled with a name.
Tights
All ballet dancers and dancers who have tights for their costumes must have a new pair of pink ballet or the designated color (tan or black) tights. Keep this pair with their costume. No shiny or run tights allowed!
Revolution brand tights may be purchased at Freedom Dance Center. This is for uniformity. Attention all dancers: Please do not wear undergarments under your tights and costume. They bunch up, ruin the lines of the costumes, and draw focus. Tights are considered underwear.
Hair
Please prepare all ballet dancers’ hair in a formal ballet bun at home. All ballet buns should be placed at the crown of the head, gelled and hair-sprayed. No bangs or wispy her allowed. Please secure bun with hair nets and as many bobby pins as are necessary to keep it secure for the entire dress rehearsal and the performance. Hair clips, jewelry, bows and ribbons are not allowed if not part of the costume, as they interfere with head pieces. Head pieces must be secured with criss-crossed bobby pins.
Makeup
For the younger dancers, lightly apply blush/rouge and a brownish-red lip stain/stick after they have their costumes on. Eye brow pencil can be used for those that have very light eyebrows, mascara is optional.
All older performers - No “over the top” garish makeup. Natural colors are best for eye shadow. Also apply rouge, eyeliner, and lip stain after costumes are on. Remember that lights tend to wash out the eyebrows. Use an eyebrow pencil if your eyebrows are very light.
Performance Equipment Needed
All performers: Please make a checklist of all equipment needs: tights, shoes, hair pins, safety pins, hair nets, hair spray, make-up, needle and thread.
Younger dancers: please have all extra items in a zip lock bag with your name on it.
OTHER RULES
-No jewelry of any kind is allowed unless specifically approved/requested by the instructor.
-No nail polish
-No chewing gum
- No eating or drinking while in costume unless you are consuming clean dry snacks such as pretzels, and clear fluids such as water. Food may be eaten in dressing rooms only.
All performers are to remain in their dressing rooms until they are called.
Please NO DADS pick up their daughters from the dressing area, as there will be girls changing, please ask for assistance if you need to collect your dancer. A staff member will be positioned in the lobby for your assistance.
Attention: Cameras and camcorders will not be allowed. There will be no photos or filming allowed during the performances. No exceptions! Please adhere to this rule as it can be distracting and dangerous to performers and disrespectful to other audience members. This is a very standard theatre rule. There WILL be a DVD of the show available for purchase for recital.
Final Notes:
We realize there are many rules here to digest and follow, but these rules are absolutely necessary to ensure a smooth professionally-run performance. When dancers know what to expect it is much less stressful for them. Countless hours have gone into this show and we need every dancer and parent to do their part.
IMPORTANT: We want to ensure a memorable, wonderful experience for all of our dancers who have worked so hard to bring you this showcase of their talent and discipline. Therefore, we want to provide an atmosphere where they feel joyful and at peace, not stressed out or worried. We have found that by purposefully going into both dress rehearsal and the day of recital with smiles and calm demeanor, ensures the best possible experience for everyone involved. Please, if you run into obstacles or have problems, let us know how we can help, and please try to contribute to our atmosphere of joy and calm.
Thank you to all parents, grandparents, and guardians! None of this would happen without your help and support! Special thanks for the volunteers who make the show possible.
